370 Jay Connection

A UX project to build cultural awareness, empowering collaboration at 370 Jay St

370 Jay Street is a 13-story building utilized by NYU to house various programs, focusing on digital media, arts, and technology. The goal was to centralize these programs to foster collaboration and easier sharing of resources among students and faculty. However, challenges arose due to a lack of clear insights into the specific needs and desires of the building's users. Working with Janelle Green, the University Relations Officer, and various stakeholders, our team sought to gather key insights that would inform effective solutions to enhance the building's role as a hub of innovation and collaboration.

The Process

The project was split into two phases. In the first phase, the emphasis was on user research. Collaborating with my team, we developed a research plan, conducted interviews with users, and synthesized our findings into "how might we" questions

These questions then guided the second phase, where we concentrated on developing a prototype and conducting usability testing on our proposed solution.

“How might we foster collaboration at 370 Jay St?”

Our Findings

  • Collaboration at 370 Jay St is a latent opportunity due to structural and institutional barriers

Refine the scope of project to focus on students as they are the stakeholders that will benefit most from collaboration, and a better student experience increases the value of 370 Jay St.

  • Collaboration for student meant building communities, motivated by academic and social needs

As it currently stands, most student experience at 370 Jay St tends to be limited at the scope of their own program and in relation to classroom opportunities.

  • Focus on designing digital based student engagement and community building at 370 Jay St

Design digital media based experience or solutions that transcends barriers; this means deliberately choosing to park offline/ non digital ideas for now i.e. events.
